Feast of the Assumption

Feast of the Assumption – Forever crowned, Our Lady dignifies the celebration as she gloriously proceeds in her gold-embroidered garments

The Archbishop of Split, Stjepan Cupilli, on September 22, 1716, solemnly crowned the painting of the Mother of Mercy with the golden crown, in remembrance of the glorious defense of Sinj. The inscription on the crown says In perpetuum coronata triumphat 1715.

In Sinj, one of the greatest Marian sanctuaries, it is always particularly festive shortly before and during the Feast of the Assumption of Mary.

Loyal to their patroness and savior for years, the people of Sinj and numerous pilgrims celebrate the Assumption of Mary. Their loyalty is reflected in the distinctiveness of the date for the celebration of the Day of the Town of Sinj.

The Church is cramped during the Novena prayer and the introductory Rosary prayer, both during the evening worship service at 7 p.m. and the morning service at 6 a.m. During the Mother Mary’s vigil, the evening of užežin (the fast), the Holy Mass is celebrated at Dr. Franjo Tuđman Square, and the celebration starts at 4 a.m. with the traditional early service. The procession with Our Lady of Sinj painting and the Holy Mass start at 9 a.m. In Mary’s honor, the crowds of believers spill out into the decorated city streets sprinkled with flower petals. Mačkule cannons fire from the Old Town to mark the places of benediction, and fanfares escort and welcome the painting of Our Lady of Sinj carried proudly by Alkars on their shoulders, Alka guys, members of military and civil authorities, members of associations, priests, monks and nuns.

The evening Holy Mass is celebrated at 6 p.m., and the following day, also the traditional Mass of Thanksgiving at the Old Town. On the first Sunday after the Feast of the Assumption, the blessing of children to Our Lady of Sinj takes place in the Monastery courtyard.
